I’m another sports Substacker looking forward to BlueSky’s growth. It’s been really cool thus far — https://bsky.app/profile/pakaflocka.bsky.social

Let’s hope it is what it says it is.

I’m hoping it continues to grow. I have been excited over the past couple of weeks to see several sports communities about which I care (women’s soccer, Manchester United men and women, Chicago Cubs) grow quickly and other sports seeing gains.

As someone who was part of the thriving (until recently) mess that was baskeball (and specifically NBA)Twitter, it’s interesting to observe it fragment and somewhat cautiously migrate to BlueSky. My sense is that sports on BlueSky may never replicate the messy madness that it was on Twitter, especially if athletes and team accounts don’t move over in notable numbers.

That may result in quieter, more thoughtful subgroups of sports fans and media members that rise to a notable volume around big events (Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals, March Madness etc). But I do think BlueSky will have to get a bit “noisier” to allow for the full insane experience that was sports Twitter at its best (pre-2016), and I don’t know if social media is too fragmented at this point to allow that to happen.

You’re definitely right about the major newsmaker accounts, but i think they’ll be lured by the engagement opportunities. It’s about meeting the audience where they are. What’s another account to manage?

Yes. She is the best sports radio talk show host in WFAN history. I love her. I used to be her caller all the time until I got banned from the station for trashing the station on Reddit.
